The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is federal law that creates civil rights and substantive protections to children with disabilities. Do you understand your school district’s legal obligations to your child under federal law? Come learn the basic framework of IDEA 2004 as well as the implications of recent case law in the context of achieving a free appropriate public education (FAPE) for the special needs child.
Assessing the child in all areas of suspected disability is the legal obligation of the district and usually the most important building block of the IEP. Without an accurate assessment, it can be nearly impossible to place the child in the correct program that capitalizes on his abilities. This session will explore common contradictions and misinterpretations in district assessments that result in inappropriate recommendations.
The first step to effectively controlling the IEP process is determining the appropriate strategy to gain leverage with the school district. The IEP process will be broken down into components to teach parents how to evaluate the best course of action in each situation. Techniques for forcing district personnel to fully explain their positions and district “policies” will be explored. Parents will learn how to apply these concepts to their child’s individual needs and their district.
EBCALA recently submitted an amicus brief to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in G.M. v. Saddleback Valley Unified School District. G.M., a mother of a child with disabilities, appealed to the Ninth Circuit after the District Court ordered her to pay the District’s attorneys fees. Jennifer Keefe and Tim Adams will discuss the negative impacts such awards would have on families and children with disabilities including children with autism.
What does all of this information mean to advocating for your individual child? Parents are encouraged to submit their questions to integrate the lessons learned with a new plan of action.

Emerging evidence indicate that NAC modulates the glutamatergic system,
increases glutathione, enhances neurogenesis and has anti-inflammatory
properties. This pilot trial of PharmaNAC at Stanford University was
provoked by the need to find new solutions. Irritability affects 60 to
70 percent of children with autism. Irritability refers to more than
mild behavior issues, and can affect learning, vocational activities and
the child's ability to participate in autism therapies. The study
results indicate clinical benefit.
Erika Anderson
An introduction to the Rapid Prompting Method (RPM) will detail an overview of the method and display the benefits of RPM including video clips of a wide variety of learners with diverse abilities and ages. liver plays in children with autism and in avoiding this illness in the
future. How can we achieve hopeful and positive results that will last a
lifetime? The simple solution is: Love and care for your child's liver. How
is this accomplished? Dr. Anderson will answer this question.
